Walks on West Cliff

Navigating a Workforce Being Transformed by AI

I recently enjoyed a walk on West Cliff with Charles Koontz, Co-founder of Monarch Energy, and his son Spencer Koontz, who is preparing to enter a workforce being rapidly transformed by AI. See below for their insights on navigating today’s changing landscape:

From Spencer Koontz (aspiring student entering the workforce):
“AI is set to reshape our modern world in ways both exciting and scary. As someone entering the workforce, I want to stay employable for the next four decades (or until I strike it rich!)”

Spencer’s strategy for learning and job hunting in the age of AI:

  1. Build interdisciplinary expertise. Humans will remain essential. Broader knowledge helps manage AI agents and eases future pivots.
  2. Explore AI tools. Gaining hands-on experience with a wide range of tools will be critical.
  3. Be proactive with integration. Don’t wait, start using AI now to improve your work and show how it adds value.

From Charles Koontz (Founder, Monarch Energy):
“Growth drives investment. Rapid growth drives investment and innovation.”

AI and cloud computing are fueling billions in infrastructure spend including data centers, power, efficiency tech, and more. The initial wave was all about speed; the next will demand innovation in design, sustainability, and operations.

Charles’ advice to young professionals:

  • Choose a fast-growing industry that excites you.
  • Understand the problems worth solving — and who pays to solve them.
  • Sharpen your skills to contribute.
  • Build a network to make your ideas heard.

We’re entering a phase where mechanical, electrical, and civil engineers, and the trades that support them, will be more important than ever.

🤔What advice would you give recent graduates entering today’s workforce?
